We have all heard about organic food products but how many of us know what exactly is it and when can we call a food totally organic? With the recent hype about the organic foods, there are so many facts and myths circulated all over the media.

Today, let us get a scientific insight on what is organic food, why do we need to go organic and what are the benefits of consuming organic products. A section on the harmful effects of non-organic foods and other products is also included in this post.

After you have read this article, if you feel the need to go organic, which you will, do check out Mrs Flannerys health food shops. They are one of Australia’s leading organic stores and whole foods market. They are in this business for the last 30 years and so they know how to source the best quality products for you.

What is Organic Food?

A food or any product is organic if it is cultivated or produced by using natural methods one hundred percent. No chemical fertilisers, no chemical pesticides, no artificial hormones, no antibiotics and no genetically modified organisms should be involved in the process or be used on the plant or even in the soil where the crop is cultivated.

A processed food or a prepared food item is organic if no synthetic ingredients like food colours, food flavours, preservatives, artificial sweeteners and mono sodium glutamate (MSG) etc are added. This is called a pure organic product.

Benefits of Organic Foods

  • Organic food is more nutritious – The natural nutrition value is preserved as they are not destroyed by the use of artificial chemicals.
  • Organic food is rich in anti-oxidants – They contain better quality of vitamins and minerals. These are highly important nutrients in the food and we only require in small amounts but still are of lofty importance for maintaining good health.
  • Organic foods have less nitrate levels compared to the non-organic foods.

  • Organic dairy products and other organic animals’ food products like meat are known to have better quality protein and fatty acids like the omega 3 that are more suitable and are favourable for our body.

Hazards of consuming non organic foods

A non-organic food is something that does not fit into the definition of an organic food, be it a food that is prepared using chemical fertilisers or a genetically modified food. However, do not get confused between ‘organic’ and ‘natural’. Natural just means, the food does not have artificial additives.

It may also be any food that contains added preservatives, food colours etc. As anyone could easily visualise, these are all harmful as they are all artificial. The simple fact of life that I could always dare generalise is this. The more we go against nature, the harmful it can get.

Organic foods are one hundred percent natural and so they are most suitable to our body. That is why it is always best to go organic and go natural for a healthy and happy living!
